BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Health First nurse Judie Kent is being hailed as a hero after rushing to aid a motorcyclist who was seriously injured in a crash last Thursday.

Martin Johnson, a father of five, was on his way to work when a car attempting a U-turn struck him at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Masterson. The impact left him with a broken femur and multiple fractures.

Before emergency responders arrived, bystanders, including Kent, who was on her way to work, immediately pulled over to assist.

Relying on her medical training, she stabilized Johnson’s injuries, preventing further damage to his leg before paramedics took over. Despite being credited with saving his life, Kent remains humble about her actions.

“I didn’t think I did anything heroic,” she told Fox 35. “It’s just instinct for me. You see something. You’re able to help. You stop and help.”

Still hospitalized and in significant pain, Johnson expressed deep gratitude for Kent’s quick response.

“Without her help, I probably wouldn’t have my leg anymore, and without anybody’s help, I probably would have been dead,” he said.

Johnson’s family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical expenses and lost wages, though the full extent of his recovery remains uncertain.

This incident underscores motorcyclists’ risks on the road and highlights the importance of bystander intervention in emergencies. Johnson and Kent are now advocating for increased awareness among drivers to ensure motorcyclists are given the space and caution they deserve.

“Look twice, and if they’re nearby, give them space,” Johnson said.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash as Johnson focuses on his recovery.

Congressman Mike Haridopolos took to the U.S. House of Representatives floor in Washington, DC, on Wednesday to honor Kent, whose service and courageous actions define the best of our community as she jumped into action and saved a motorcyclist who had crashed on the side of the road.

Florida’s 8th Congressional District includes all of Brevard and Indian River counties and parts of Orange County.

“Judie Kent’s lifesaving bravery embodies the very best of our community. It’s a privilege to recognize (her) on the House floor and to shine a light on the heroes among us—those who serve, sacrifice, and step up when it matters most,” said Haridopolos.

He addressed his fellow House members, stating the following:

I rise today to honor the extraordinary bravery of Judie Kent, a young woman, and nurse from my district.

This past week, Judie’s quick thinking and courageous actions saved the life a motorcyclist and father of five who was struck by a car on his way to work.

As she drove past the past the scene Judie instinctively pulled over and used her medical knowledge to administer critical aid.

Her swift response stabilized his wounds, and she is credited with saving the man’s leg, and possibly even his life. It is selfless acts like these that exemplify the best of our community, and I am honored to recognize Judie’s
heroism here today.

Mr. Speaker, it is my privilege to share her story, and I thank her for her service and resolve.
