The full remarks are below:
Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the late Major General Mason M. Patrick.
General Patrick, a West Virginia native, West Point graduate and World War I veteran, honorably served our nation for 41 years.
In 1921, General Patrick oversaw the creation of the U.S. Army Air Corps, the precursor to the modern-day Air Force.
Recognizing that true leadership comes from experience, he learned to fly at the age of 59.
His vision to place air power in its own branch was instrumental in building the world’s most formidable Air Force.
In 1950, Patrick Air Force Base in my district was named in his honor, recognizing his historic contributions to military aviation.
Today, this base is known as Patrick Space Force Base—a testament to how America’s leadership in the skies has evolved to dominate new frontiers.
His vision for America’s air power laid the groundwork for today’s advances in space exploration and defense.
May we always remember General Patrick’s contributions to our nation.
Background:
Major General Mason M. Patrick dedicated 41 years to serving our nation, leaving a lasting impact on military aviation. Born in West Virginia, he led the Army Air Service, the predecessor to today’s Air Force, and championed aviation’s role in modern warfare.
Under his leadership, the U.S. Army Air Service achieved historic milestones, including the first flight around the world and the establishment of key aviation research, training, and experimental facilities. Recognizing the need for an independent air service, General Patrick played a crucial role in the creation of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
After his passing in 1942, his contributions were honored in 1950 when Naval Air Station Banana River was renamed Patrick Air Force Base. In 2020, following the establishment of the U.S. Space Force, the base was redesignated as Patrick Space Force Base, home to Space Launch Delta 45, the unit responsible for all space launch operations from America’s East Coast.
