Congressman Mike Haridopolos Delivers Speech Honoring Veteran Family From Rockledge

February 14, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, Congressman Mike Haridopolos (FL-08) delivered a speech on the Floor of the House of Representatives honoring constituent Robert L. Willett. The 98-year-old is a brave veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Willett is seeking a memorial for his late mother to be placed in Cape Canaveral Cemetery, but has faced bureaucratic restrictions. Congressman Haridopolos is working to overcome the bureaucratic red tape that stands in the way of this honorable memorial.

A video of Rep. Haridopolos’ speech can be found here.

The full remarks are below:
“Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the Willett family and the life of Corporal Robert Willett Jr.
98-year-old Corporal Willett bravely served our nation in both World War II and the Korean War.
The son of WWI veteran Roger Willett Sr., he fought for his family’s legacy.

When Roger Willett Sr. passed away, he was laid to rest at Canaveral National Cemetery.
Corporal Willett made a simple request to honor his parents, which was that his late mother receives the memorial plaque next to her family, where Corporal Willett himself will one day rest.
However, due to bureaucratic resistance, this has resulted in three years of denial from entrenched government agencies.

Denying recognition is a failure to those who serve. My office will not stand by as bureaucracy overrides honor. We will continue to fight for all American heroes. The Willetts’ dedication reflects our nation and serves as a powerful reminder. It is my privilege to speak today, and I thank him for his service and resolve.”
