Rep. Haridopolos Introduces One Giant LEAP Act
Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Haridopolos (FL-08), Chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics, alongside U.S. Congressman George Whitesides (CA-27) introduced the One Giant LEAP Act. This bipartisan legislation modernizes and streamlines the federal commercial space launch licensing process through the creation of a centralized electronic portal within the Department of Transportation.
“Florida’s Space Coast is leading the next generation of American space exploration and commercial launch innovation, and outdated federal bureaucracy should not slow down America’s ability to compete,” said Congressman Haridopolos.“The One Giant LEAP Act cuts red tape, improves transparency, and helps ensure the United States remains the global leader in space—because we can’t be number one on Earth if we are number two in space.”
“I know firsthand how fast the commercial space industry moves, and our licensing process should support that innovation,” said Congressman Whitesides. “The One Giant LEAP Act will establish a modern, centralized portal that brings clarity, accountability, and efficiency to the licensing process. That's good for California's aerospace sector, good for American competitiveness, and good for taxpayers.”
Background:
Currently, commercial space companies must navigate multiple agencies, fragmented communication systems, and inconsistent review processes when applying for launch licenses and related approvals.
The One Giant LEAP Act would:
- Establish a single online portal for commercial launch licensing applications and related authorizations,
- Improve transparency by allowing applicants to track application status, milestones, and timelines in real time,
- Streamline interagency coordination between federal agencies involved in the licensing process,
- Enhance efficiency through electronic submission, modification, and documentation management, and
- Increase public visibility by sharing non-sensitive application status updates and timelines.
