Rep. Haridopolos Urges House Leadership to Advance Bill Withholding Congressional Pay During Government Shutdowns

April 14, 2026

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Haridopolos (FL-08) joined a bipartisan group of freshman Members in urging House leadership to advance H.R. 5891, the Withhold Member Pay During Shutdowns Act. This legislation would pause congressional salaries during a government shutdown, holding Congress accountable when it fails to fulfill its most basic responsibility: funding the federal government.

“Across our country, hardworking Americans know a simple truth: if you do not do your job, you do not get paid. Congress should be held to the same standard. That’s why on March 25th, I requested my pay be withheld,” said Congressman Haridopolos. “If we fail to fund the government, then Members should not be collecting a paycheck.”

Congressman Haridopolos has already voted on five occasions to fully fund DHS and is continuing to call on Democrats to stop playing politics with Americans’ livelihoods and pass a funding bill to end the shutdown immediately.
